Things To Do and Places Of Interest

Beaches – The Blue Flag Beach at Poppit Sands is just a few minutes drive away and is a glorious stretch of sand, backed by dunes. There is a café on the beach, which is open throughout most of the year. Good bathing beach with life guards and warning flags. Ceibwr Bay is renowned for its unspoilt beauty – it is a secluded rocky cove with pebbles and rocks and is completely covered at high tide. Grey seals often come here and there are coastal birds in abundance. Mwnt Beach is owned by the National Trust and the headland overlooks a small and secluded sandy beach – the tiny 14th Century church stands on the headland and is well worth a visit – views of Cardigan Island from the cliffs. Aberporth Beach is a place where you can get the best of both worlds – a Blue Flag beach – a favorite with bathers and sailors alike. Both Newport Sands and Newport Parrog beaches are within easy reach and well worth a visit. Other beaches close by are Cwmtydu, Llangrannog, Penbryn and Tresaith.

Walking – The choice is yours! Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, or any of the walks along the Cardigan Bay coast – there is just so much to choose from – invigorating walks across wild headlands with stunning views, challenging mountain hikes in the Cambrian Mountains, riverside rambles along the Teifi, Aeron Rheidol and Ystwyth valleys, delightful strolls along country lanes with ancient hedgerows full of wildflowers…………the list is endless. Check out Pembrokeshire Footsteps for specialist guided walks for every ability, complete with local information about the area, wildlife etc.  The famous Cardigan Walking Festival takes place in the autumn, with lots of organised walks that explore some of the hidden delights of the region.

Wildlife – Dolphins, seals, porpoises, buzzards, red kites, otters and many others are there to see, so keep your eyes open! Take a catamaran trip from Aberaeron with Coastal Voyages (01545 570 142) to see dolphins, seals, cormorants, fulmars and many others.

Coastal Towns – from Cardigan to Aberystwyth, virtually all of the coastal towns and villages along the Ceredigion coast have a special charm, with the many coloured Georgian and Victorian houses and shop fronts. Of special note is New Quay, recently renowned for the filming of “The Edge of Love” about the life of Welsh Poet and Dramatist Dylan Thomas. Going south along the Pembrokeshire coast Newport, only 20 minutes away, is well worth a visit for its galleries, coffee shops, walks and a surprising choice of places to eat.

Art and Crafts – the Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion coast provides inspiration for many artists and the Cardigan Open Studios Week provides a great opportunity to see some of their works.

Cycling – Bring your own bicycle, or hire bikes for a day and go where the fancy takes you! Cycle hire from New Image Cycles in Cardigan.

ActivitiesOakwood Theme Park - fun for all the family. Cardigan Bay Watersports – you can hire a sailing dingy, windsurfer, kayak or powerboat. Book a Boat Trip with Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre (01545 560 032), or hire a canoe with Heritage Canoes at Cilgerran (01239 613 961).

Fishing – The famous salmon leap Cenarth Falls is only a few miles away. Daily and weekly licenses available from the Post Office in St Dogmaels (01239 612 563).

Castles – There are many castles (and ruins!) in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion – the nearest being Cardigan Castle and Cilgerran Castle. More information can be gleaned from CADW - the Welsh equivalent of English Heritage.

AND, of course, the amazing St David's Cathedral, in Britain's smallest city.

Historic Buildings and Gardens – the National Trust looks after a number of properties in Wales, including the recently re-opened Llanerchaeron House and Garden, just outside Aberaeron. Wales also boasts many fine gardens which are well worth a look.

Golf – enjoy a round or two at Cardigan Golf Club – 01239 621 775.
